Potential Further FCC Bans
The FCC is considering a new rule that would go further than its December 2025 decision to add DJI to its Covered List. That earlier move blocked new DJI products from getting FCC authorization but let already-approved products keep being sold. The new proposal would ban future imports and sales of drones already cleared for the U.S. market, framed as targeting "military-grade" drones, but the definition is broad enough to sweep in civilian tools like thermal-imaging or LiDAR-equipped drones, agricultural spraying drones, and docking stations. People could keep using drones they already own, but wouldn't be able to buy new units of the same models, and replacement parts could become harder to find.

DARPA Lift Challenge Chooses Winner
The DARPA Lift Challenge wrapped up Aug. 9 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, with teams competing to build heavy-lift drones capable of carrying payloads over four times their own weight, well beyond the roughly 1:1 ratio typical of current multirotor drones. AVIDrone took first place with a 3.84:1 payload-to-weight ratio and a $1.25 million prize, followed by MTech Operations (3.64:1) and Xtreme Aerial Concepts (3.45:1). DefendTex actually posted the event's best ratio, 9.63:1, but didn't complete a scored run, so it instead won a $500,000 "Most Promising Technology" award; other special awards went to the University of Maryland's tri-rotor design and Portal Aircraft Company's turbine-driven powertrain.
The challenge drew 489 applicants, with 132 teams eventually invited to compete and 70 official runs across 24 flight windows. DARPA plans to keep developing the most promising designs through Small Business Innovation Research funding and investor connections, aiming to mature the technology for both military and commercial uses, and winning aircraft will be featured in a museum exhibit.
Farmers in South Dakota Adopting Drones Despite Cost Barrier
A new SDSU study, based on a 2025 survey of 595 corn and soybean farmers in Eastern South Dakota, found that about a quarter have adopted drone technology despite high upfront costs (roughly $4,391 initially, plus about $2,685 in annual costs). Drones are used either for aerial imagery to spot crop problems early or for precision application of fertilizer and pesticide,18% of respondents use imagery drones and 13% use application drones, with application drones being the newer, faster-growing category despite shorter battery life limiting their efficiency on large operations. Profitability was mixed: 22% of application-drone users and 15% of imagery-only users reported at least a 5% profit increase, losses were rare, but roughly 20% of adopters (and nearly half of nonadopters) said they simply didn't know what impact drones had on their bottom line.
The study also separated who adopts drones from who profits from them, finding the two groups don't fully overlap. Adoption was more common among farmers with more education, larger farms, more off-farm income, and more challenging soil conditions, while age didn't affect adoption at all. But among those who did adopt, older and more educated farmers were more likely to report profits from application drones. The researchers point to cost as the main barrier, especially for younger farmers, and suggest subsidies or low-interest loans, along with better outreach on profitability, could help more farmers adopt with confidence.
