CUAV Expo was fortunate to have editors from Geo Week, our sister event, onsite with us this year. In her article, content specialist, Abigail Hart, shared what she learned from the event.
The real takeaway from this year's Commercial UAV Expo is that the industry has stopped waiting for permission and started building as if its regulated future is already a foregone conclusion. That confidence showed clearly when FAA's Robert Reckert and EASA's Daan Dousi shared a stage and traded mutual respect instead of the usual hedging. The FAA is betting on real-world data over theory, with Reckert's "10-yard line" metaphor signaling calculated optimism for Part 108's finalization this year. EASA's SORA gets mocked for complexity, but Dousi framed that complexity as the price of flexibility, and noted the agency's new sandbox authority is quietly borrowing from the American approach. The more telling divide was cultural, not regulatory: American audiences accept drones once they understand the use case, while Europeans remain wary outside medical delivery, prompting Dousi's honest admission that rules mean little if the public won't accept what flies overhead.
The show floor made that regulatory talk feel almost secondary. Every launch answered a specific bottleneck on the road to BVLOS: anti-jamming GNSS gear acknowledged contested skies, a dual-battery drone solved the safety math regulators need before saying yes, and remote ID systems and a scalable 500 Wh/kg battery cell showed an industry engineering for volume, not demos. Nothing is finished, Part 108 is unsigned, SORA remains a maze, public trust is uneven, but this expo made clear the gap between ambition and execution is closing, and closing on purpose.
AirData’s New Live Streaming Capabilities
AirData launches a new Stream Recording and Rewind update that tackles a straightforward but persistent problem: in live drone operations, the moment that matters most rarely coincides with the moment someone hits record. The update adds three tools, a 10-minute rewind on live streams, automatic recording that saves streams for later review, and the ability to start a recording that retroactively captures the previous 10 minutes, so teams no longer lose critical footage just because no one was rolling tape at the right second. That gap is only getting bigger as drone programs move into Drone as First Responder, dock-based inspections and BVLOS work, where the pilot, the aircraft and the decision-maker are often in three different places, and the person who needs the video may not even be watching when the important thing happens.
What makes this more than a convenience feature is where it plugs in: it works across drone brands, docks and third-party encoders, and it stores footage independently of the aircraft, so a lost drone or a dead SD card no longer means lost evidence. That's a meaningful hedge as the FAA's incoming Part 108 rule raises the bar for operator record-keeping in routine BVLOS flights, and it's a real operational upgrade for the public safety and utility teams already quoted praising the ability to rewind and zoom on footage in real time rather than relying on a verbal recap. It's a small feature by name, but it's addressing exactly the kind of gap that shows up once drone programs stop being about the flight and start being about everything that has to be provable after it.
FCC Denies Requests for Comment Period Extension
The FCC has denied requests from DRONERESPONDERS and the Commercial Drone Alliance to extend the public comment period on its proposal restricting certain foreign-produced drones, keeping the deadline at September 2. That decision highlights the tension at the center of the proposal itself: the agency wants to move quickly on national security grounds, even as it acknowledges the underlying categories may need refining. The proposed "military-grade" definition sweeps in thermal imaging, LiDAR, docking stations and coordinated drone swarms, technologies with clear commercial and public safety applications, alongside more traditionally defense-relevant capabilities. The FCC's own notice asks commenters whether all the listed equipment truly qualifies as military-grade, suggesting the lines are still being worked out even as the clock runs short. DRONERESPONDERS and the Commercial Drone Alliance asked for four more weeks to consult stakeholders and gather evidence on supply chains and operational impact, but the FCC held firm, citing the need for timely action.
There's meaningful nuance worth keeping in view: existing equipment remains authorized, domestic products and government use are unaffected, and this isn't a blanket restriction on foreign drones. But the compressed timeline does raise a practical question for commercial operators using foreign-made thermal cameras or LiDAR, namely whether the record will have enough detail to draw careful distinctions between defense-grade and everyday commercial equipment. For now, the window to make that case runs through September 2, after which the FCC will need to weigh a proposal that, by its own admission, is still refining exactly what it's trying to restrict.
