Several partnerships with innovative and proven technology providers demonstrate Field’s commitment to delivering top-tier solutions to its customers.
Technology provider Field transforms geospatial data into valuable insights. The company takes care of the entire data lifecycle, from data capture, data processing to analysis and interactive visualization. With a total of 300 employees, Field is active in five countries, offering aerial surveying, land surveying, mapping and modeling, mobile mapping and geophysics, interactive software, and land and property consultancy services. Its head office is in Oslo, Norway.
Field was the result of a 2022 relaunch of the Norwegian-based company formerly known as KVS Terratec. Between 2022 and 2023, this consolidation led to the creation of the modern Field Group. As of early 2024, Field Group split into separate entities, each under new ownership: the geospatial and land surveying business continued under the name Field, while the Drone and Inspection Division was spun off as a separate company.
Providing value through cutting-edge geospatial technology
Field’s precise insights help organizations build and maintain safe and efficient infrastructure for communities across the Nordics and beyond, such as keeping road networks safe and operational, preserving marine and forest habitats, and constructing quality buildings, bridges, and tunnels.
Recently, the company has been actively promoting its mobile mapping services online. For example, a recent webinar covered how the company combines ground-based and airborne technologies with the support of AI to deliver fast, reliable and precise solutions. Second, a press statement was released discussing an investment in state-of-the-art mobile mapping technology from Riegl to deliver highly detailed Reality Capture services for infrastructure, roadways, and terrain across the Nordics.
More specifically, Field acquired the RIEGL VMX-2HA, a high-speed, high-performance dual scanner mobile mapping system, which was complemented with a Ladybug 6 360-degree camera and advanced pavement analysis cameras. Mikko Salonen, Executive Vice President at Field, stated that the investment in Riegl’s technology underscores Field’s commitment to delivering top-tier solutions across the Nordic region and that the system empowers them to tackle a wide range of projects with greater speed, flexibility, and precision, helping their customers achieve their goals more effectively.
Field drone services and partnerships
Field’s commitment to delivering top-tier solutions is also reflected in its drone activities. Field’s history in drone services grew from KVS Technologies, which first began with inspections of the power grid using drones, and supplied drone services and software to large grid companies that previously used helicopters to inspect the power lines. The company moved away from traditional data capture early on and applied AI to recognize power lines and intelligently capture high-quality data of the infrastructure.
In April 2023, Field Group acquired Raleigh drone firm PrecisionHawk, which gave Norway-based Field a foothold in the US and plans are in place to operate PrecisionHawk under the Field brand name. Field Group became an established technology supplier in the US following an exclusivity agreement with drone solution company Spright in 2021 for launching its technology and inspection services in the North American power grid market.
In November 2023, a partnership with Skyports Drone Services (SDS) and Field was announced to offer utility and infrastructure inspections BVLOS in Europe. Back then, existing asset survey methods for the rail and utilities sector were largely manual, relying on single-sensor drone flights flown visual line of sight, or the use of helicopters. The service offering not only provided utility and infrastructure owners with rapid and detailed insights into their assets but also facilitated critical decision-making, cut operational costs, enhanced safety, and produced significantly lower emissions than existing solutions.
That same year, Field and Alva Industries announced a partnership to increase safety and efficiency for Field’s UAV infrastructure inspection services in the United States and Norway. This introduced Alva’s propulsion systems in Field Group’s UAV fleets, increasing safety and efficiency due to the system’s exceptional performance, high reliability, and long lifetime, benefiting customers and the industry.
Alva and Field have collaborated for almost two years to develop reliable, safe, and cost-effective UAV platforms and propulsion systems. Field will continue to produce Alva-powered UAVs to drive innovation in the US and Norwegian infrastructure inspection sector and deliver the best UAV service capabilities.
