This week, Badland Batteries unveiled their new commercial UAS batteries for purchase, officially hitting the market on October 13. The new 12S and 6S battery packs will be manufactured and shipped from the company’s location in Fargo, North Dakota. This location is significant with the announcement, as many batteries today are designed and manufactured in Asia. In their release of the news, Badland Batteries said they are “shifting the narrative by producing a top-of-the-line battery designed, manufactured, and tested in the United States.”
Each of the two new offerings is a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 17,000 milliampere-hours (mAh). The 12S and 6S utilize pouch cell technology, a format utilized in many fields today, including medical devices and consumer technology and which uses a flexible structure and lightweight aluminum-laminated casing. The company says, with the help of this pouch cell technology, they are optimizing high energy density and high discharge rates to produce “one of the highest performing battery packs on the market.” Furthermore, they note that customers will be able to complete missions in a variety of environments as the battery packs boast an operating range of -20°C to 60°C.
“Our engineering and manufacturing teams have powered some of the world’s most advanced projects with custom battery solutions,” said Badland Batteries CEO Terri Zimmerman in a statement. “Now, we’re channeling that same innovation and top-tier performance into our new commercial-off-the-shelf 12S and 6S battery packs. Customers can count on these batteries to deliver Packet Digital’s renowned quality and reliability straight out of the box.”
As regulations in the United States continue to point more toward locally manufactured products, the market will continue to look for as many components as possible being designed, manufactured, and shipped from within the country. Looking ahead, Badland Batteries says they are looking to increase their presence on the market, with plans “already underway” to expand their offerings. Specifically, they say they have 23000mAh 6S, 30000mAh 6S batteries on their roadmap.
