Ready for take-off? Towards Detect and Avoid for Commercial UAVs

Many UAV commercial use cases will only take off when the autonomous operation of UAV fleets is allowed in shared airspace. For this to happen, development of enabling technologies at an acceptable size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) is still required. This whitepaper focuses on the technical challenges facing UAV autonomy, including last resort tactical airspace deconfliction by means of onboard sensing, AKA Detect and Avoid (DAA). We also consider safety, the achievable with different sensors and data processing techniques, whether industry SWaP-C needs can be met and chart a course towards certification.
